Budget is a major concern when buying a Desktop PC. a top-of-the-line setup will cost more than the average home PC, but there's no sense in paying for features you'll never use. Buying a high-end Desktop Computer workstation as a home entertainment computer is overkill, just as selecting a value system for doing heavy video editing will leave you under equipped. Desktops can cost as little as $200 for a home system to more than $10,000 for a high-end video/graphics/gaming workstation.
Desktop Computer Budget-minded user (price 300-500 up to $700) These are usually value systems with Celeron or Sempron processors, 40 to 80GB hard drives, 256MB of memory, and a CD-ROM drive, but little else. You may also get a Linux-based OS, instead of Windows XP Home Edition. In most cases, monitors are sold separately, and the machines are not easily upgraded.Look for a desktop PC in this price range if you're just getting started, on a very tight budget, need a second or third system for light duty in your household, or simply want a desktop for writing school papers and surfing the Web.

Digital data comes with its own special needs for your desktop, such as huge hard drives, ports to get the data in and out, and the ability to make that data portable. On-site technical support should also come as part of the package. And don't forget ease of use, which is very important to the home user, since they don't have the benefit of in-house training and technical support departments.
Value systems (cheap Dekstop PC).

The demands made on home PCs are often light—accessing the Internet, collecting and storing recipes, and keeping track of the family budget, for example. Even the most affordable PC is capable of this and much more. Value systems use lower-cost processors, such as those in the Celeron or Sempron series, and come loaded with the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system. They should also include at least 512MB of memory (although 256 is okay, we recommend 512MB to be able to run Windows XP properly) and an 80GB hard drive. They generally have integrated graphics and sound, an integrated 56K modem, and a combo DVD/CD-RW or DVD+RW drive. You can upgrade most value desktops by installing a more powerful processor, more memory, and larger hard drives, but the price will climb as well. If you plan to upgrade at a later date—by adding expansion boards, for example—be sure to choose a desktop that can handle additional PCI, PCI Express (PCIe) or AGP boards. (Some value systems don't have the ability to accept these devices.) To sweeten the pot, many manufacturers offer free printers or digital cameras as part of the package, and some offer a huge discount on the system itself if you sign a multiyear contract for Internet service.

As the home market has grown, companies have faced mounting costs for on-site and telephone support. As a result, many systems now come with self-diagnostic and troubleshooting tools, enabling you to resolve minor technical glitches or restore your system to its original state (i.e. its state when you bought it).
Dektop Computer Multimedia systems. A good multimedia system need not be a high-end machine, but should have a Pentium 4, Athlon 64, or G5 processor or better, a minimum of 512MB of memory, a dual-layer DVD+/-RW drive for video burning, and a DVD-ROM drive for copying a DVD. You'll want one of the new PCIe graphics cards for 3D graphics, a minimum of 200GB of hard-drive capacity for storing those huge video files, and a high-quality 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound system. Also look for systems that are preloaded with multimedia software, such as audio- and video-editing applications and programs for CD and DVD creation. Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) is making headway among multimedia systems. It offers a 10-foot user interface and a remote control for playing videos, TV, music, and photo slide shows. If you're getting the hardware anyway (a TV tuner, surround sound, and a dual-layer DVD burner) investigate a Windows XP MCE-equipped system as a possible alternative. ATI's All-in-Wonder graphics/TV tuner cards and their regular TV tuner cards and nVidia's Personal Cinema TV tuners come with software that gives you the 10-foot interface and remote control, but without having them tied to the OS.
Desktop Computer for Gaming systems. Hard-core gamers want the fastest Computer. Fortunately for them, there are a bunch of CPUs to choose from: Pentium 4, Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (EE), Athlon 64 bit, Athlon 64 FX, or G5. You can even consider the "workstation" CPUs, the Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron, if you prefer a dual-processor rig. Look for at least 1GB of DDR or DDR2 memory, a PCIe graphics card, 200GB of hard drive space—or better yet, a RAID 0 configuration and a large data-storage hard drive with it—and a dual-layer DVD+-RW drive for making DVD copies of your home movies, as well as data files or your personal use. For online gaming, you'll want to configure your machine with a fast Ethernet connection for broadband servic—generally cable or DSL. Adding wireless (802.11x) is also a plus. Even 802.11b is fast enough, but if you're buying a new system anyway, look for the faster 802.11g. When choosing the ideal Computer gaming or multimedia desktop pc, steer clear of machines that use on-board video controllers, which tend to have trouble processing the 3D graphics used in today's most popular games. A quality add-on surround sound card will enhance your gaming experience, although the new integrated sound controllers that ship with gaming boxes now support surround sound (so don't forget the 5.1 or 7.1 speakers!). How to Buy a Desktop and Find the desktop PC specs that are just right.

Desktop Pc General purpose user:desktop Coputer with a Processor dual-core CPU and enough power to quickly run productivity apps, view and edit vacation photos, manage MP3s and videos, and even play many of today's games--the core activities most common to families, students, and the general purpose PC user. If you spend $ 500 -1,000, you should even be able to run Windows Vista with the fancy Aero visual effects enabled. Spend half that amount, and in most cases you'll still be able to run common tasks without delay, although 3D gaming becomes a stretch. You might even find a dual-core chip in a $500 PC (you should insist on a dual-core chip these days, unless your budget keeps you under the $500 mark), but Vista could still give you trouble. Be sure the PC is equipped with at least 1GB of memory, and it's a good bet that you'll be able to smoothly run Vista. Add in a 128MB graphics card, and you'll get the Aero effects with little to no performance loss. Apple has yet to state the system requirements for Mac OS X Leopard; while it's hard to prepare for the future with a Mac, given Apple's tip-lipped ways, a Mac Mini or an iMac will get the job done for most of today's day-to-day users.
Desktop PC for Home office worker (small businnes)
Graphics are less of a concern for most businesses, unless you run a design shop. At minimum, you'll want a system with enough power (read: dual-core CPU) for multitasking your daily office chores. The money you save on the graphics you can put toward a larger flat-panel display and a better warranty. OS windows Vista complicates matters a little. Microsoft recommends at least 512MB of system memory and a DirectX 9-capable graphics card, and it ups the specs to 1GB of RAM and at least 128MB of independent video memory for Vista Home Premium with Aero. Of course, an iMac will get the job done, too, though at a higher price than your typical business PC.
Dekstop PC for Power user
It's easy for the price to get out of hand with a power PC. Take, for instance, any of these quad-core PCs. Look for an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM.You'll also need a large, fast hard drive--perhaps two or more if you plan to transfer and edit movie files--and of course, a DVD burner or--if you have an HD display--a Blu-ray or HD DVD drive. If your goal is digital design, Apple's Mac Pro shows a lot of promise, and we'll give Apple credit for its legacy in this area. We still won't recommend an Apple for gaming, though, so if that's your aim, it's Windows for you.
Desktop PC for Home theater enthusiast
Media Center functionality is built into Windows Ultimate and Home Premium, so you could make the argument that a home-theater PC doesn't need its own category anymore. Of course, you'd be wrong. We never really bought into the idea of putting a standard tower desktop in the living room, which is why we're glad we're to see so many ultra-small-form-factor designs such as Apple's Mac Mini and Shuttle's XPC X200M. You don't really need all the power of a traditional desktop to simply watch downloaded movies and listen to music, as long as you can output video and audio from your PC to your TV and your audio receiver, you're all set. You might sacrifice some video quality on the lower-end systems, and if you're really demanding in that regard, you can get a larger A/V component-style case with a full-fledged video card in it to help with the video processing.
Another question to ask yourself with a media PC: do you want to use your TV as your primary display? Flipping through your recorded TV shows via Media Center is easy to do on your TV, but simple PC tasks, such as writing e-mail and browsing the Web, aren't ideal with the 10-foot interface of sitting on your couch and squinting at small text and icons. This is why we think that wireless networking and smaller, cheaper PCs have helped the media PC come a long way. By minimizing the cables and their own footprint, these less offensive computers make it easy to justify owning two PCs: one that's hooked up to the TV and a more traditional system that sits on your desk. The vast majority of people buy a computer to browse the Web, check and send e-mail, and perform word processing or spreadsheet work. Today, even the least-expensive, lowest-of-the-low-end desktop PC can perform any of those jobs admirably.
However, you'll want more performance oomph when you use certain peripherals, such as a scanner. You'll want even more performance if you're a gamer or if you engage in processor-intensive tasks, such as digital video editing and encoding--or, if you simply need to have the latest and greatest gear available.
Most vendors let you customize and upgrade base-model PCs with a mind-boggling selection of features. Need extra storage? Pick a larger hard drive. Want extra memory? Load up with 4GB of RAM. Ready to burn Blu-ray Discs or watch HD DVD movies? Choose an optical-drive option that supports your desired format.
We recommend you take your time and select only what you need today, based on the following guidelines. If your budget allows, buy what you anticipate needing within a year from today. And be sure to check our charts of the Top Value PCs and Top Power PCs, before making your purchase.
Important: Desktop Computer or PC Processor (CPU). A central consideration to any PC purchase, the processor determines how quickly the PC runs applications and performs many tasks. It also tends to determine how costly your system will be. Processor speed is measured in billions of operations (gigahertz, or GHz) per second. Most new processors from chip giants AMD and Intel have two cores inside to improve performance. Even if you're buying a low-end system, getting one with a dual-core CPU is worthwhile.
At the low end (sub-$1000), we recommend either AMD's 2-GHz Athlon 64 X2 3800+ or Intel's 2.8-GHz Pentium D 915 as a starting point. Midrange buyers--those who need to strike a balance between price (sub-$2000) and performance--should zero in on either Processor AMD's 2.6-GHz Athlon 64 X2 5000+ or processor Intel's 2.3-GHz Core 2 Duo E6400. Shoppers with bigger budgets and greater processing needs should look to Intel's 2.67-GHz Core 2 Duo E6700 or processor 3.93-GHz Core 2 Extreme X6800.
If you plan to play back high-definition HD movies on Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD, you'll need a lot of processing power. Software manufacturer CyberLink, maker of the popular PowerDVD movie playback application, recommends the following CPUs for Blu-ray and HD DVD: for Intel, the Pentium Extreme Edition, the Pentium D 9xx series, the Core Duo T2xxx series, and the Core 2 Duo E6xxx series; for AMD, the Athlon 64 FX series, the Athlon 64 X2 series, and the Turion 64X2 series.
Important on desktop PC: Installed Memory (RAM) The more installed memory your Desktop PC has, the more applications you can run smoothly at once, and the better the system will perform. Upgrading memory in a desktop computer after you purchase the PC is a snap, but usually it's worth buying the amount of memory you want preinstalled with the system. At the low end--sub-$500--you'll want at least 512MB of memory. Our recommendation for $500-to-$1500 systems is to seek a minimum of 1GB of memory. At the high end ($1500 and up) you should get 2GB or more.
Important: Graphics Board (VGA Card) and Graphics RAM The graphics board or integrated graphics chip generates all images on the PC. Graphics boards come with variable amounts of on-board memory; only hard-core gamers need the speediest, most advanced models.
Many sub-$1000 systems, and all sub-$500 systems, offer integrated (on-board) graphics. Generally, integrated graphics will do fine for basic computing, but if you're multitasking while watching a video, for example, the graphics may hiccup. For the midrange, you'll want at least a 128MB nVidia GeForce or ATI Radeon card. Higher-end configurations will require dual-GPU arrangements, either on a dual-GPU graphics card or via two cards in an SLI nVidia GeForce 7800-based or ATI Radeon CrossFire X1950XTX-based setup.
If you want to prepare for HD video, movie player software maker CyberLink recommends nVidia GeForce 7600 GT, 7800 GTX 512, 7900 GX2, 7900 GTX, and 7950 GX2 cards with nVidia PureVideo HD, or ATI x1600, X1800, and X1900 series cards with ATI Avivo technology.
Important: Monitor Desktop PC.Your monitor is what you'll be staring at for hours on end, so pick something that will serve you well over the long haul. Many people can get by just fine with a 17-inch LCD monitor, but we recommend jumping up to a 19-inch model for the extra screen real estate. Look for a digital monitor with DVI (you'll receive a sharper image with digital) instead of an analog-only model (often, the sort that comes by default with the cheap PCs advertised online). Wide-screen monitors are an increasingly popular option, as are dual-monitor displays (if you want to go the latter route, look for a graphics card with dual-DVI ports).
Important: Hard Drive Desktop Computer The larger the hard drive, the more data and files you can store. Most business users don't need a hard drive larger than 80GB, but for mixed use you'll want more capacity. People who work with big databases, spreadsheets, or digital photo, music, or video files should think larger--drives are available in up to 750GB capacities. Two drives in a striped RAID 0 array can offer a boost on performance; alternatively you can get two drives mirrored together in a RAID 1 (or similar) configuration, to provide fault-tolerance against hardware failure.
Most drives today are Serial ATA and spin at 7200 rpm; however, serious gamers and other users who thrive on speed will appreciate the 10,000-rpm high-performance drives of Western Digital. The Western Digital Raptor X maxes out at 150GB, though, so you must make a trade-off in capacity to get the performance edge.
Somewhat Important: Optical Drive All PCs need an optical drive--a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM model at the bare minimum--to read CDs and DVDs, respectively (a DVD-ROM can also read CDs). For a few dollars more, you can add a rewritable drive so you can back up your data to CD or DVD (low-end systems sometimes provide only a CD-RW drive; most PCs offer a multiformat, dual-layer rewritable DVD burner). For standard DVD, the best drive you can buy is one that handles writing to double- or dual-layer DVD discs, and offers LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling.
If you're eager to get a head start on the next-gen revolution, some PC makers are now offering Blu-ray Disc burners as an option; expect to pay at least $500 extra for the luxury of being able to play back high-definition Blu-ray Disc movies and to write to 25GB and 50GB discs. Competing next-gen format HD DVD is now available on PCs as an HD DVD-ROM drive only, for disc playback and often for standard DVD recording, too. HD DVD burners won't be available until sometime in 2007.
Somewhat Important: Removable Storage and Ports

You want to make sure your PC has at least one or two USB ports on the front of the system, to plug in your digital audio player and a USB memory drive, for example. You'll want more USB ports in back, for attaching everything from an external hard drive to a printer. Higher-end systems and Media Center PCs should also have audio/video inputs and FireWire ports within easy reach.
Somewhat Important: Input DevicesYou can easily upgrade your system's input devices after you purchase it.

This way, you can choose the right mouse and keyboard for your needs, and maybe even try out whichever models you're considering at your local store. At the least, your system will come with a 102-key PS/2 keyboard and USB optical mouse. Many systems offer keyboards with programmable multimedia- and task-centric buttons. Wireless keyboard and mouse options are also common. Windows Media Center PCs generally include wireless keyboards and mice, as well as a remote control (if the system has a TV tuner).
Important: Warranty and Service PlanYour PC manufacturer probably will be the party you'll turn to in your hour of need, when your video card flakes out, say, or when your hard drive makes chattering noises. A service plan provides a valuable lifeline for busy professionals or novice users who may not be able to repair difficult problems themselves. Check PC World's annual Reliability and Service survey, where readers collectively determine which PC makers provide the best and worst technical support and warranty service. Most desktop PC makers offer multiple tiers of service, so you can get--and pay for--the level of service you want.
At minimum, look for a desktop PC with at least a one-year parts and labor warranty, and phone support for the duration of the warranty. Better still is finding a PC with 24-hour phone support for the lifetime of the machine. You increase your chances of getting a reliable computer by choosing from brands that have proven reliable in the past.

What's Available on Desktop computer; There are eight major brands of desktops to choose from. Desktop Computers from Dell , Compaq, eMachines, Gateway (which owns eMachines), Hewlett-Packard Desktop (which owns Compaq), Lenovo (formerly branded as IBM), and Sony desktop computer all use Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Apple is the sole maker of Macintosh desktop computer models. (When Apple releases the next version of its OSX operating system, Macs will be able to run Windows as well as Apple’s own OS X.) Many small mail-order and store brands also cater to desktop computer budget-minded buyers. Price: $400 to $3,000.

HOW TO CHOOSE Desktop Pc First, decide whether to upgrade your current Desktop computer. Upgrading rather than replacing it might make sense if your additional needs are modest--a second hard drive, say, because you’re running out of room for digital photos.
